Lubrizol Shares Insights on Lubricants as Enabler for China VI Emission Standard and Stage 3 Fuel Consumption limits

CLEVELAND and SHANGHAI, June 14 2017 - At the 11th ICIS Asian Base Oil and Lubricants Conference in Singapore, The Lubrizol Corporation, one of the world's leading manufacturer of lubricant additives, shared its view and analysis on the trends in heavy duty engine oil around the year 2020. China VI is projected to significantly limit NOx and particulate matter exhaust emissions, and the Stage 3 Fuel Consumption standard will require an average 15% fuel economy reduction. Lubrizol pointed out the latest API CK-4 and FA-4 specifications can support OEMs in complying with China VI and Stage 3 Fuel Consumption limits.

OEMs have invested heavily in new engine technologies to comply with the two major regulations, China VI emission regulations and Stage 3 Fuel Consumption standard, which take effect in 2020. "API CK-4 and FA-4, the two newly licensable API categories as of the end of 2016, are expected to be an important basis of oil formulation, with a higher compatibility to new engine technologies, as well as a direct contribution to support OEMs' effort to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations and fuel consumption standards," says Junmin Zhao, Lubrizol regional business manager, Engine Oils.

China production of midsize and heavy duty trucks is forcasted to be more than 880,000 in 2020. China VI drives the wide installation of aftertreatment devices such as the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalystic reduction (SCR). "A low SAPS (sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur) formulation is required to be compatible with aftertreatment devices," Zhao shared in his presentation. "Beijing has required DPF installation in new heavy duty vehicles since January 2016 and may implement China VI earlier than national adoption in 2020. Using lower viscosity grade engine oils will be required to meet Stage 3 Fuel Consumption limits. The use of API CK-4 and FA-4 lubricant solutions provide OEMs with increasing engine protection and contribution to fuel efficiency," claims Zhao.

Lubrizol has developed additive technology to support OEMs and oil marketers as they prepare to comply with China VI and the Stage 3 of Fuel Consumption limits.
